Victoria Brownlee,
This comprehensive guide to Japan will leave you wishing you could jump on a plane immediately。 The author’s knowledge of the country, its people and its culture feels limitless。 I can’t wait until travel restrictions are lifted so I can put this book to use, but for now I’ll keep visiting vicariously。
Betsy,
This travel guide is the best! It gives great advice on so many fronts。 I can tell the author has a true love of Japan and it’s people。 The restaurant recommendations were excellent and very helpful on our trip。 Moon never fails to disappoint! AAAAA+
Sebastian Walls,
I got this book on the mail before my Southeast Asia manual arrived(was planning a 6 month trip to Asia, until Covid happened)。 Southeast Asia was my main focus。 Afterwords, the plan was to spend a couple of weeks in Japan。 Now, I have literally decided to invert my plans after reading Dehart’s book。 Japan will now be the central setting for my adventure。 I’ve always thought of Japan as a culturally rich country, but now, I see it more like an ocean—with a depth that goes beyond one’s imaginatio I got this book on the mail before my Southeast Asia manual arrived(was planning a 6 month trip to Asia, until Covid happened)。 Southeast Asia was my main focus。 Afterwords, the plan was to spend a couple of weeks in Japan。 Now, I have literally decided to invert my plans after reading Dehart’s book。 Japan will now be the central setting for my adventure。 I’ve always thought of Japan as a culturally rich country, but now, I see it more like an ocean—with a depth that goes beyond one’s imagination。 In this book, Dehart went to a tremendous length to decompose such depth。 It’s over 700 pages! And yet, there is hardly any fat。 Though he provides extensive advice on everything。 In multiple cities。 Something I particularly appreciated is that there is valuable information for all budgets, and for a wide variety of tastes; high-end bars in Tokyo with a buttoned up atmosphere, not the best for socialising, but for those with a more nuanced palate。 As well as pocket-friendly spots with everything for ¥300。 Breaking everything down into very practical steps, providing the pertinent cultural references for each setting—norms, unwritten codes, etc。 Things that a westerner would be oblivious to。 Though I have yet to finish the book—I’m about halfway done, my favourite so far is the food section for Tokyo。 It’s not only rich in substance and insider information, but it’s also very artfully written。 It’s always a pleasure to read a travel writer who not only has honed the craft of writing, but is also passionate and insightful of the place he’s writing about。 Anthony Bourdain would’ve definitely approved。 I’ve now spent some time on Youtube researching the Izakaya and the Kissaten, and have been fantasising on giving them a shot。 There is also a vast amount of suggestions for accommodation。 The nightlife section on Tokyo is also gold。 As it offers a huge range of possibilities; from bars, to clubs, to night cruises, Mexican cocktail bars, cigar bars, the underground scene, etc。 The list goes on and on and on。 I can’t wait for this whole pandemic thing to be over, to be able to safely get on a plane again。 And dive deep into Japanese infinity。 If you’re also thinking about going to Japan, or if you’re maybe even just curious, then this book is your friend。 Again, huge thumbs up for the writing, the editing, the pictures, & the overall aesthetics of the book。 Really, the work was made。 。。。more
